As of yesterday, thanks to a new Supreme Court decision, dumping sewage in open waters is back, baby, in the USA. The decision curbs the ability of the Environmental Protection Agency to set limits on water pollution. In Chadwick's home country, Parliament has also declined in recent years to ban combined storm-sewer discharge into rivers, or to establish a system of automatic fines. It's daunting to think how hard and long Chadwick had to work and pressure and fight and, no doubt, sacrifice, to make the progress he did. And he seems to have received little recognition at the time for his efforts. But here you are, Richard, writing about his lasting legacy. Inspiring stuff. But, oh, how I wish the powers-that-be didn't make doing the right thing such a slog for so many...
